Kirkwood Test Center: All other exams

Kirkwood Test Center aims to provide the highest quality testing services by maintaining a secure facility, skilled and courteous employees, and positive working relationships with students, faculty, and the public.

Kirkwood Test Center administers a wide variety of placement, professional certification, and other third-party exams. An appointment is required for all exams. Please note that third-party testing may be limited or unavailable during the College's peak academic testing times.

Some exams require a proctoring fee, while others are administered free of charge. Please check our Proctoring Fees and Refunds page for more information.

ACCUPLACER (ELA and Next Gen)

Kirkwood Community College uses multiple measures for placement into college-level English courses. You should take ACCUPLACER only if you have been advised to by your adviser or another College employee. You must have been issued a "K" number (a student ID number) in order to take ACCUPLACER.

ACCUPLACER consists of multiple sections:

  • ELA Grammar
  • ELA Reading
  • ELA Writing
  • Next Gen Reading
  • Next Gen Writing

ACCUPLACER is not timed; however, you should allow for approximately 1 hour per section.

ALEKS

This exam can be taken from home

ALEKS is a math placement assessment. It is not proctored and available through MyHub; it can be taken anywhere internet access is available. ALEKS is a required math assessment used to map a student’s strengths and weaknesses, and determine the most appropriate courses for each student as they move forward.

Note: the ALEKS assessment must be taken through Kirkwood Community College (as opposed to another institution).

How to take ALEKS

  1. Log in to MyHub
    • Select the Math Assessment ALEKS button, located under the Student Links Section.
    • Under the Assessments section, select Standard Math Placement [unproctored], FY 2022 / Higher Education Math Placement.
    • Complete the entire ALEKS tutorial before getting started.
  2. After your initial assessment, check the Placement Testing Course Recommendations Table to see which courses you are eligible to enroll. Please talk with an Academic Advisor to discuss which math course is required for your program of study. 
  3. If you did not earn the proficiency score you think you should, you can utilize the prep and learning modules to review and retake the assessment up to four additional times. 
  4. If you earned the placement result needed to enroll in a particular course, you are still eligible and encouraged to utilize the ALEKS learning modules for twelve-months to review and prepare for your math course.

Bio readiness

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

The Bio readiness exam is an alternate pre-requisite for enrollment in BIO-112 General Biology I. The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. A score of 65% (26/40) or higher will allow registration in BIO-112. You are allowed 2 attempts to pass the Bio readiness exam. If a passing score is not earned after the second attempt, you must pursue an alternate BIO-112 prerequisite option.

Before you can take the Bio readiness exam, contact the Math & Science department at (319) 398-5516 or mathscience@kirkwood.edu to request the Bio readiness exam be added to your Talon.

Important info about Bio readiness

  1. No materials or resources are allowed on the exam.
  2. You cannot take the exam twice in the same day.
  3. A Bio readiness exam study guide is posted in the Talon shell. Students are strongly encouraged to review this study guide before taking the exam.

Credit by exam

Kirkwood Test Center administers the credit-by-exam test-out for the following courses:

  • BCA-189 Microcomputer Literacy
  • CIS-121 Intro to Programming Logic
  • CIS-207 Fundamentals of Web Development
  • CIS-335 Relational Database and SQL
  • CSC-116 Information Computing

Iowa Dental Board

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

The Test Center administers the following Iowa Dental Board exams:

  • Jurisprudence for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants
  • Infection Control for dental assistants
  • Radiography for dental assistants

A resource, Jurisprudence of Dental Professionals, is allowed on the jurisprudence exam and can be printed for free on the Iowa Dental Board website. No handwritten notes are permitted in the printed booklet.

Kirkwood Test Center charges a proctoring fee of $20 per exam for all Iowa Dental Board exams. This fee is paid at the time you register using our online scheduling tool.

Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

Kirkwood Test Center administers the following Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board exams:

  • Plumber with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • HVAC Refrigeration with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Hydronics with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Mechanical with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Sheet Metal - Journeyperson

Lead abatement

Cedar Rapids

We offer the following lead abatement exams on behalf of the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL):

  • Lead Abatement Contractor (2 hours)
  • Lead Inspector Risk Assessor (3 hours)

There is a $65 fee for each exam. Please bring a check made payable to Kirkwood Community College to your appointment. Sorry, cash will not be accepted. You will receive your exam results within 7 days of testing.

MOS Certification

Kirkwood Test Center administers the following Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams:

  • Access 2019 Expert
  • Excel 2019 Associate
  • Excel 2019 Expert
  • PowerPoint 2019 Associate
  • PowerPoint 2019 Expert
  • Word 2019 Associate
  • Word 2019 Expert

You can take these exams in person at the Test Center, or virtually from your own device.

NOCTI

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

The National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) offers a battery of assessments and standardized tests for students studying career and technical programs in high schools and technical colleges in the United States. A number of NOCTI assessments are linked to industry certification programs.

Pearson VUE

Pearson VUE helps students and adult learners achieve measurable progress in their lives through certification, licensure, and admission exams, as well as exam preparation materials, to further their professional careers or prepare for higher education. 

Pearson VUE exam sponsors include:

  • Regulatory agencies: insurance, real estate, mortgage brokers, appraisers, contractors
  • Professional, IT, certification, and employment testing organizations
  • Health services (nurse aides, cosmetologists, barbers) organizations

Pesticides

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

We offer pesticide applicator certification exams on behalf of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). There is a $20 fee per exam, payable online at the time of registration. Sorry, cash will not be accepted.

You will need to create an account in Quia (the online testing platform) prior to coming to the Test Center. Instructions can be found here.

TEAS

Cedar Rapids, Coralville

Please create an ATI account before signing up for a test appointment and write down your user name/password to bring to the test. You must bring a debit or credit card to register and pay for your exam. The cost of the exam is $70.

Important note: You can only take TEAS 3 times. After your third attempt, you must wait 3 years before you can retake it.
