Kirkwood Test Center: Exams we offer

Kirkwood Test Center aims to provide the highest quality testing services by maintaining a secure facility, skilled and courteous employees, and positive working relationships with students, faculty, and the public.

Exams we offer

The Kirkwood Test Center offers a variety of academic and non-academic exams for students and community members. 

Face-to-face courses

Offered at: Cedar Rapids & Coralville

You can take exams for your face-to-face courses if either of the following conditions are met:

  • You have approved accommodations
  • You have missed an in-class exam and your instructor has given you a make-up.

For all face-to-face courses, the instructor must submit an exam request to the Test Center before an appointment can be scheduled. If you do not see your exam listed, please contact your instructor.

Distance Learning courses

Offered at: Cedar Rapids & Coralville

If your Distance Learning course requires proctored exams, you can take your exams in the Test Center. You can also make arrangements to take your exams at a Kirkwood Regional Center and, with prior approval, at another college's test center or a public library.

Placement exams


Offered at Cedar Rapids & Coralville

Kirkwood Community College uses multiple measures for placement into college-level English courses. You should take ACCUPLACER only if you have been advised to by their adviser or other College employee. You must have been issued a "K" number (a student ID number) in order to take ACCUPLACER.


Offered at home! (un-proctored)

ALEKS is a math placement assessment. It is un-proctored and available through MyHub; it can be taken anywhere internet access is available. ALEKS is a required math assessment used to map a student’s strengths and weaknesses, and determine the most appropriate courses for each student as they move forward.

Note: the ALEKS assessment must be taken through Kirkwood Community College (as opposed to another instituion).

How to take ALEKS

  1. Log in to MyHub
    1. Select the Math Assessment ALEKS button, located under the Student Links Section.
    2. Under the Assessments section, select Standard Math Placement [un-proctored], FY 2022 / Higher Education Math Placement.
    3. Complete the entire ALEKS tutorial before getting started.
  2. After your initial assessment, check the Placement Testing Course Recommendations Table to see which courses you are eligible to enroll. Please talk with an Academic Advisor to discuss which math course is required for your program of study. 
  3. If you did not earn the proficiency score you think you should, you can utilize the prep and learning modules to review and retake the assessment up to four additional times. 
  4. If you earned the placement result needed to enroll in a particular course, you are still eligible and encouraged to utilize the ALEKS learning modules for twelve-months to review and prepare for your math course.

Offered at Cedar Rapids and Coralville

Please create an ATI account before signing up for a test appointment and write down your user name/password to bring to the test. You must bring a debit or credit card to register and pay for your exam. The cost of the exam is $70.

Important note: You can only take TEAS 3 times. After your third attempt, you must wait 3 years before you can retake it.

Before you register for the Bio readiness exam, please contact the Math & Science Department at (319) 298-5516 so they can set up your exam in Talon.

Proctored exams for other institutions

Kirkwood Test Center offers exam proctoring for students attending other institutions and candidates of independent credentialing bodies. An appointment is required for all exams. Please note that third-party testing may be limited or unavailable during the College's peak academic testing times (midterm and final exam weeks).

Students attending other colleges and universities, and individuals seeking certifications from credentialing bodies or other exam sponsors may have their exams proctored at Kirkwood Test Center. Appointments are required for all proctored exams. Refer to our Know before you go page for helpful information about testing procedures, identification, and Test Center rules.

General guidelines

  1. Kirkwood Test Center administers paper-and-pencil exams and web-based computer exams. In most cases, we cannot proctor exams that require the installation of third-party software on our computers. Contact us prior to scheduling an appointment if you have any questions.
  2. Test takers are advised that, starting January 1, 2024, Kirkwood Test Center will charge a fee for proctoring exams from other institutions. We will update this page with new instructions as that date approaches.

Procedure for having your exam proctored at Kirkwood Test Center

  1. Inform your instructor or exam sponsor that Kirkwood Test Center has agreed to proctor your exam.
  2. Provide your instructor or exam sponsor our contact information, which can be found on our Locations and hours page. If a contact name is required, use Chris DeLine for Cedar Rapids and Linda Venzke for Coralville.
  3. Your instructor or exam sponsor will provide us the necessary instructions to administer your exam.
  4. Once we have received the instructions from your instructor or exam sponsor, you can schedule an appointment using our online scheduling form. Be sure to note whether you are scheduling at Cedar Rapids or Coralville. Select "Proctored exam for another institution" and complete the rest of the form.

Professional Certification Exams

Kirkwood Test Center offers professional certification exams for a wide variety of third-party exam sponsors and credentialing bodies. An appointment is required for all exams. Please note that third-party testing may be limited or unavailable during the College's peak academic testing times (midterm and final exam weeks).

Iowa Dental Board

Offered at Cedar Rapids & Coralville

The Test Center administers the following Iowa Dental Board exams for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants:

  • Jurisprudence
  • Infection Control
  • Radiography

A resource, Jurisprudence of Dental Professionals, is allowed on the jurisprudence exam and can be printed for free on the Iowa Dental Board website. No handwritten notes are permitted in the printed booklet.

Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board

Offered at Cedar Rapids & Coralville

The Test Center administers the following Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board exams:

  • Plumber with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • HVAC Refrigeration with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Hydronics with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Mechanical with Gas - Master and Journeyperson
  • Sheet Metal - Journeyperson

Lead abatement

Offered at Cedar Rapids

We offer the following lead abatement exams on behalf of the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL):

  • Lead Abatement Contractor (2 hours)
  • Lead Inspector Risk Assessor (3 hours)

There is a $65 fee for each exam. Please bring a check made payable to Kirkwood Community College to your appointment. Sorry, cash will not be accepted. You will receive your exam results within 7 days of testing.

Offered at Cedar Rapids

Pearson VUE helps students and adult learners achieve measurable progress in their lives through certification, licensure, and admission exams, as well as exam preparation materials, to further their professional careers or prepare for higher education. 

Pearson VUE exam sponsors include:

  • Regulatory agencies: insurance, real estate, mortgage brokers, appraisers, contractors
  • Professional, IT, certification, and employment testing organizations
  • Health services (nurse aides, cosmetologists, barbers) organizations

Pesticide applicator certification

Offered at Cedar Rapids

We offer pesticide applicator certification exams on behalf of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). There is a $20 fee per exam, payable online at the time of registration. Sorry, cash will not be accepted.

You will need to create an account in Quia (the online testing platform) prior to coming to the Test Center. Instructions can be found here.
