The Seed Library at the Kirkwood Community College Library offers seeds for patrons for at-home gardening. We encourage taking what you need in order to leave seeds for others to use. Labelled packets will house inventoried seeds while blank packets will be for taking seeds home. A list of available seeds will be made available to patrons while the seed storage will remain behind the circulation desk. Patrons would need to come to the desk to select seeds.
Donating
Donating seeds is how the library populates the Seed Library. We will take seeds for vegetables, herbs and flowers. The seeds ideally should be from the previous growing year, and be clean and dry. The seeds must also be separate from the parent plant and be free of plant pieces. Bring donated seeds in a container or bag, please no loose seeds. Multiple donations of different seeds must be in different containers and labelled. Librarians will keep an inventory with the seed and plant information at the desk, along with a donation intake form.
Resources on how to save seeds at home can be found here and here.
Role of Librarians
As Kirkwood librarians, we are always here to help! However we are not gardening experts and would not be the best place to get advice for your at-home garden. We can find resources for issues you might be having or for specific practices. If more professional advice is needed, we can find other places or people to contact for help. Our goal is to offer the opportunity for anyone to create and maintain a local garden.
If you need disability-related accommodations in order to use the Library, our website, or our resources, please contact the library at library@kirkwood.edu or 319-398-5697.
