UPDATES: Library Response to coronavirus

This page will be regularly updated with information on special library services and library changes due to campus health concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19)

Important message about due dates and returns

In the unique circumstances of having the Kirkwood Library locations closed during the end of the semester, please read the following information about how to return books, graphing calculators, and laptops you have checked out.

Check back here for updated information as we learn more about what date staff will begin returning to campus.

BOOKS

Where and when can I return my library books? What if I get a notice saying a book is overdue?

WHEN: The library has extended due dates for all books. All books are now due on Friday, July 31st. However, if the projected date to reopen campus gets pushed back again, we will continue to extend due dates to the new reopen date.

WHERE: You have a few different options for returning books:

  1. If possible, we ask that you hold on to the library books you have checked out until the college reopens.
  2. You may also use the outdoor drop boxes, located outside the Main Campus and Iowa City Campus Libraries.
  3. If you are out of town due to the quarantine (or for any reason) Iowa colleges across the state have agreed to accept book returns from other college libraries and return them to Kirkwood for you once our libraries are all open again. See this map for college library locations where Kirkwood books may be returned up until May 31st. This policy is only for book returns, not calculators or laptops.
  4. If you prefer, you may also mail your library books back to campus. The Library's mailing address is: Kirkwood Community College, Library, 6301 Kirkwood Blvd. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

GRAPHING CALCULATORS

When can I return my graphing calculator? How can I get my $20 deposit back?

WHEN: The library has extended the due dates for all semester-long graphing calculators. All calculators are now due on Friday, July 31st. However, if the projected date to reopen campus gets pushed back again, we will extend due dates to the new reopen date.

DEPOSITS: Kirkwood will be automatically returning all calculator deposits to students who checked out a graphing calculator for spring semester. This deposit will be sent to your bank account if Kirkwood has this on file. If not, a check will be sent to your mailing address on file. Watch your student email for additional information regarding the timing of this payment.

WHERE: You have a few different options for how to return your calculator:

  1. If you are moving or will not be in town over the summer and need to return the calculator by the end of spring semester, you may return your calculator to the outdoor library book drop on either the Main Campus or Iowa City Campus.
  2. If you will be around, we suggest you wait until the college has reopened, and return your calculator in person. Check back here for more information about reopening in the coming weeks.
  3. If you are already out of town, you might choose to mail your calculator back to campus. The Library's mailing address is: Kirkwood Community College, Library, 6301 Kirkwood Blvd. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

LAPTOPS

When can I return my laptop and charger (and any other computer equipment)?

WHEN: The library has extended the due dates for all laptops and other computer equipment. All laptops are now due on Friday, July 31st. However, if the projected date to reopen campus gets pushed back again, we will extend due dates to the new reopen date.

There is a special laptop return event on campus if you want to return your laptop sooner than July. Read more here.

Otherwise, please keep your laptop until either the libraries reopen, or you receive an email with special instructions to return laptops on another day.

MATERIALS RETURN SAFETY PROCEDURES

Before returning library items, please observe the following safe-handling practices:

  • Do not clean, disinfect, or microwave library materials before returning them. For example, do not use water, Lysol, or any other cleaner on materials.
  • If you or your family members are sick or have been sick, seal materials in a zip-lock style bag if possible before returning.
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before handling library materials for return and again after you have completed the return.

If you have any additional questions about returns, please use the Ask a Librarian chat on this page, or send an email to circulation@kirkwood.edu.
