New Library Database: Home

Details on the change from EBSCOhost to Academic OneFile

Big News!

Library Services has added several new resources to our collection of databases!

Key among these is Academic OneFile, a comprehensive database similar to EBSCOhost's Academic Search Elite, but with thousands more journal titles covered. To see all the new database titles and try them out, go to the Library's Databases List. Browse new titles, or browse all databases by topic to find out what all is available to you and your students. And as always, if you have any questions or suggestions, or would like a librarian to visit your class and help students search more effectively, please contact a librarian

FAQ: the switch from EBSCOhost to OneFile

Q: Why is the Library changing databases?

A: Kirkwood Library Services (and all public and academic libraries in Iowa) receive enormous help from the State Library of Iowa in negotiating and financially supporting access to a basic set of databases for locating magazine and journal articles. This year the State Library put out a call for bids, and in the process selected a different database provider, Gale (Cengage), which has a database called "Academic OneFile." This database is comparable to EBSCOhost's "Academic Search Elite," which we at Kirkwood have been using for several years.

Q: What will we gain access to with Gale's Academic OneFile databases?

A. OneFile actually draws on an even larger number of academic journals than EBSCOhost's Academic Search Elite, so you may find that you can directly access even more content in your discipline than you were able to before. Along with the OneFile, the package from the State Library also includes:

  • Credo Reference: a comprehensive collection of reference book articles on a wide variety of topics
  • Transparent Language Online, Recorded Books: We aren't yet clear on what package we will have for this, stay tuned for more information!
  • Chiltons Library: an outstanding auto repair reference

Q: I have links to specific articles in EBSCOhost, Opposing Viewpoints, or Virtual Reference Library in my Talon courses. Will I still be able to access these articles?

A: If you have any direct links to Library subscription content in Talon, we anticipate that most of these will remain viable. However, we recommend that you begin checking your links in Talon to see if any need to be changed. For those links that are broken, you can search for the article title again by using the Library's main "WorldCat Discovery" search, or by going directly to the database the article was in and searching again. If you have any questions about this process or run into any problems, please contact the Library for help.
