Details on the change from EBSCOhost to Academic OneFile

Big News!

*UPDATE: June 8, 2017*

EBSCOhost has made the Library an incredible offer, and as a result we will not be dropping the main EBSCOhost databases, at least not in the coming year (2017-18). So in addition to the extensive resources offered through the new Gale OneFile database, we will continue to have access to most of the EBSCOhost databases that we have had in the past:

  • Academic Search Elite

  • Business Source Elite
  • ERIC
  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic
  • MasterFile Premiere
  • Vocational Search
  • PsycArticles
  • Current Biography
  • Science Full Text Select
  • eBook Collection

*Original notice: May 17, 2017*

Over the past 15 years at Kirkwood, "EBSCOhost" has become synonymous with "Library article search," so this is going to be a big change for all of us. As of July 1, 2017, we will no longer subscribe to the main EBSCOhost databases, and will switch to a set of databases called "Academic OneFile," from Gale (Cengage).

We know you will have lots of questions about this change. Please look through the FAQs posted below, and if you have any additional questions please contact the library. We want to do all we can to help you make this adjustment in your courses and your work.

FAQ: the switch from EBSCOhost to OneFile

Q: Why is the Library changing databases?

A: Kirkwood Library Services (and all public and academic libraries in Iowa) receive enormous help from the State Library of Iowa in negotiating and financially supporting access to a basic set of databases for locating magazine and journal articles. This year the State Library put out a call for bids, and in the process selected a different database provider, Gale (Cengage), which has a database called "Academic OneFile." This database is comparable to EBSCOhost's "Academic Search Elite," which we at Kirkwood have been using for several years.

Q: What will we gain access to with Gale's Academic OneFile databases?

A. OneFile actually draws on an even larger number of academic journals than EBSCOhost's Academic Search Elite, so you may find that you can directly access even more content in your discipline than you were able to before. Along with the OneFile, the package from the State Library also includes:

  • Credo Reference: a comprehensive collection of reference book articles on a wide variety of topics
  • Transparent Language Online, Recorded Books: We aren't yet clear on what package we will have for this, stay tuned for more information!
  • Chiltons Library: an outstanding auto repair reference

Q: I have links to specific articles in EBSCOhost in my Talon courses. Will I still be able to access these articles?

A: If you have any direct links to EBSCOhost content in Talon, we anticipate that most of these will remain viable. However, we recommend that after July 3rd you begin checking your links in Talon to see if any need to be changed. For those links that are broken, you can search for the article title again by using the Library's main "WorldCat" search, or by going directly to the OneFile search. If you have any questions about this process or run into any problems, please contact the Library for help. Note that you won't have access to OneFile until July 3rd.

We don't yet know exactly what content will be lost with this switch, but we do know a lot of content will be gained, with access to more journal titles than those covered in EBSCO's academic database. Again, please contact the Library if you have lost access to something important to your course, and we will work with you to find a replacement.
