The Library also has two additional online instructional resources:

  • An online Research Guide with information, links, and downloadable handouts.
  • An up-and-coming Talon "Library Tutorials" course with modules that you can copy into your own Talon course for student use. Our first tutorial, "Plagiarism," is now available to copy. For more information contact librarian Kate Hess

Faculty Research Consultation

We are happy to help you with library research for your teaching, research, and professional development needs. If you are currently working on or will be working on such an endeavor we can schedule a face to face meeting with you to determine where to obtain relevant materials.  Because of the complexity of such requests, we have found that the face to face interview approach generates the best results for all parties.

Don’t hesitate, contact the Library reference desk and schedule an appointment today.

Request/Place Hold on Books & Videos

  1. Find the item by searching WorldCat from the Library's homepage. You can search by entering topic, title, author, or a combination of these in the search box, then select the "Books" tab to see just the book results, and click "Go". (For a video introducing WorldCat click here!)
  2. Click on the title of the item you're interested in to see the detailed record.
  3. From the detailed record screen, you can see a description of the item [F], the campus or library location [G], and the Request Center Delivery button [H]. Click this center delivery button to request that a book be delivered to your campus or center for you. (If, instead of "Request Center Delivery" you see "Request Interlibrary Loan" on the blue button, you can still request the book, it will just be ordered by a different process and will take longer to arrive. See InterLibrary Loan for more details.)

  4. You will be prompted to sign in with your k number (e.g. k0123456) and EagleNet password.
  5. Then choose your pickup location from the dropdown menu [J] and click "Submit."

  6. You may want to contact your county center to see about arrival. Each county center website is to the left.
  7. If you need any assistance in locating the right book for your research needs, please contact a librarian by chat or phone (see "Ask a Librarian" to the left).

Happy reading!

LibGuides: Personalized Course Library Resources Page

The page you're looking at right now was created using a software system called "LibGuides". It features flexible layout, easy updating, and reusable components. If you'd like a page with resources especially for your students, contact a librarian and we'll collaborate with you on both locating the best resources for your particular assignments and in designing a page that fits your students' needs.

Examples of some customized pages for Kirkwood classes:

Marianne Taylor, Forms of Literature: Poetry

Shelby Myers-Verhage, Composition 2

The page we create for your class can feature:

  • Direct links to library resources such as the book catalog or any of the subscription databases
  • Direct links to other online resources you want to direct your students to
  • Pages or boxes from any of the library LibGuides pages, embedded directly into your page so your students know, "these are the resources my instructor wants me to use". For example, we could put a tab on your page called "MLA Style" that will include videos on MLA Citation as well as printable guides.
  • Links that won't "go bad" -- because they link directly into the library's pages, if we update a link to a database, the link on your page will automatically update as well
  • Your LibGuides page can be embedded directly into many types of course sites, including Talon.

Contact a librarian for more details, or to get started on your own LibGuide. In Cedar Rapids contact Ryan Strempke-Durgin (x5687); in Iowa City contact Kate Hess (x3619)
